Public Health Care Town Hall Sparks Renewed Call for Community Hospital at Edmonton Coliseum
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EDMONTON, AB — January 29, 2026 — Correspondence surrounding an upcoming public health care town hall hosted by Friends of Medicare has renewed attention on a comprehensive proposal to reuse the Edmonton Coliseum into a multi-use community hub, including a full-service community hospital designed to address Edmonton’s growing health care capacity crisis.
In a response to town hall organizers and City of Edmonton officials, The Goldfire Group outlined key components of its ongoing Save the Coliseum initiative, which proposes the adaptive reuse of the Edmonton Coliseum as a cost-effective alternative to new construction while expanding access to urgently needed health services.
The proposal includes plans for a community hospital offering 240 inpatient beds, 300 recliners for admissions and transitional care, neonatal infant care, birthing facilities, two operating theatres, and the acquisition of advanced 3D medical scanners to support early diagnosis—reducing long-term treatment costs and improving patient outcomes.
Recent advocacy efforts have also highlighted delays in Edmonton surrounding the deployment of medication slow-release pumps for Parkinson’s treatment, technology already approved and in use in Calgary. Advocates argue these delays underscore the need for expanded and modernized health infrastructure within the city.
Under the proposal, the community hospital would be located on the third floor of the Edmonton Coliseum, above a revitalized main floor featuring tourism, retail, and essential services. The broader redevelopment plan includes secure digital access systems and event programming designed to generate ongoing funding for community and health-focused initiatives.
According to project organizers, the reuse of the existing Coliseum structure could save billions of dollars in new construction costs across health care and education, while accelerating the delivery of services compared to ground-up development.
The correspondence was shared in advance of a Public Health Care Town Hall taking place Sunday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Edmonton Expo Centre, featuring Dr. Paul Parks, former President of the Alberta Medical Association. The event is part of a province-wide tour addressing Alberta’s health care challenges and potential solutions.
Organizers of the Save the Coliseum initiative say the town hall presents a timely opportunity for residents, health care workers, and policymakers to examine practical, fiscally responsible solutions that leverage existing public assets to meet urgent community needs.
