New Reuse and Development Plan Positions Edmonton Coliseum as Historic Multi-Use Event Centre and Economic Catalyst

EDMONTON, AB — February 19, 2026 — A comprehensive reuse and redevelopment plan for the Edmonton Coliseum and surrounding Exhibition Lands is advancing, outlining a path that preserves the historic facility while transforming it into a modern multi-use event centre and economic engine for Edmonton and Northern Alberta.

Project proponents state that the plan demonstrates clear, achievable benefits both for the Coliseum itself and for the strategic development of adjacent lands, while honoring the City of Edmonton’s responsibility to preserve publicly owned infrastructure of historic and community significance.

Preserving a Public Asset and Historic Landmark

The Edmonton Coliseum has long served as one of Canada’s most recognized event venues and remains deeply connected to Edmonton’s identity and growth. Advocates emphasize that publicly owned facilities of this importance must be properly maintained, preserved, and utilized in a manner that benefits the public.

“The Edmonton Coliseum still has much to offer Edmonton’s communities,” said Greg N. Reimer, CEO, President, and Head of Business Development at The Goldfire Group. “Its history, infrastructure, and capacity position it to once again serve as a major destination for entertainment, community events, and economic activity.”

The plan calls for the Coliseum to be formally recognized as a historic site, ensuring its preservation while enabling adaptive reuse to meet modern needs.

Edmonton Coliseum: A New Public Event Centre and Global Destination

Under the proposal, the Edmonton Coliseum would be reintroduced as Edmonton’s New Public Event Centre — a multi-use facility capable of hosting local, regional, national, and international events. With a proven seating capacity exceeding 17,000, the venue would complement existing facilities across the city and strengthen Edmonton’s ability to attract large-scale events.

Proponents believe the Coliseum will serve as a powerful regional marketing asset, elevating Edmonton’s profile as a premier destination while supporting tourism, hospitality, and local businesses.

Leasing and Economic Development Opportunities

Significant interest has already emerged from businesses seeking to lease space within the Coliseum and connected structures. The facility’s interconnected design, including enclosed breezeways, provides year-round accessibility and protection from weather conditions.

The leasing model is designed to create sustainable, long-term revenue streams for the City of Edmonton. Under the proposal, the city would receive approximately 20 percent of revenues generated from businesses operating within and around the facility, helping reduce reliance on property taxes and strengthening municipal financial sustainability.

“This initiative represents a major opportunity to generate consistent economic activity while revitalizing an important public asset,” Reimer said.

Access to National Programs and Strategic Partnerships

As a nonprofit-aligned initiative, the project may qualify for federal and national support programs, including rapid housing and national infrastructure initiatives. Project organizers have received guidance from federal offices regarding pathways to national project designation.

In addition, discussions are underway with transportation and manufacturing partners, including VIA Rail and automotive industry stakeholders, to explore opportunities related to electric and hybrid vehicle assembly, servicing, and distribution within the broader Exhibition Lands development area.

Strategic Infrastructure and Regional Coordination

The proposal also includes provisions for enhanced transportation and public safety infrastructure, including helicopter access to support emergency services such as STARS Air Ambulance, local law enforcement, and national response coordination when required.

This integrated approach supports regional resilience, public safety coordination, and long-term strategic infrastructure planning.

A Vision for Living History and Future Growth

Project leaders emphasize that the goal is not only to preserve the Coliseum’s historic legacy, but to actively utilize and celebrate it as a living, functional asset.

“The Edmonton Coliseum represents living history,” said Reimer. “Our vision ensures it is not only preserved, but fully utilized, celebrated, and positioned as a global destination that serves Edmonton and future generations.”

Additional details, including phased implementation plans, business development partnerships, and economic impact analysis, will be released in the coming months.
